Exciting Changes to the AP Spanish Language Exam in 2027

A new digital format. A project centered on culture and music. Discover what’s changing for AP Spanish Language and Culture in 2027—and how to prepare with confidence.

The AP Spanish Language and Culture exam is changing in 2027, and there is an exciting opportunity at the center of the redesign: connecting Spanish communication with research, culture, and ideas students can explore over time. Here is what students and parents should know, along with practical ways to approach the transition.

What’s new in 2027?

College Board’s revisions take effect in the 2026–27 school year, with the exam moving to Bluebook in May 2027. The new speaking tasks draw on a course project prepared before exam day. The project’s 2026–27 theme is Art and Creativity, using music to explore cultural products, practices, and perspectives in the Spanish-speaking world. The detailed Course Project Packet is due for release in January 2027. Read College Board’s revision overview.

For students who enjoy discovering artists, understanding lyrics, or learning how music connects communities, that theme offers an engaging starting point. The learning opportunity goes beyond naming a favorite song: it invites curiosity about the relationship between artistic expression and cultural context.

A digital exam, including speaking

The exam will be fully digital. Students will complete their reading, listening, writing, and recorded speaking responses in Bluebook. College Board also specifies wired headsets with microphones. Confirm device and equipment arrangements with your school’s AP coordinator. Check the digital-exam guidance.

Make familiarity with the testing environment part of preparation. Ask your teacher about available Bluebook previews and school practice opportunities. Separate a technical question—such as how to navigate the app—from a language question, such as how to organize a response. Both deserve attention before exam day.

New project-based speaking tasks

The revised free-response section includes a Project Presentation, a Project Q&A, and an argumentative essay. Students prepare the project in advance but complete the speaking tasks on exam day. In the Q&A, they respond to four prerecorded questions they have not seen beforehand. The essay uses provided written and audio sources and is separate from the project topic. Listening and reading multiple-choice tasks make up the other half of the score. See the official exam format and scoring weights.

This is a useful reason to practice explaining ideas in different ways. After describing a cultural example, try answering “Why does this matter?” or “How does this connect to the community?” General communication practice should build the ability to respond thoughtfully, rather than depend on a single memorized speech.

Two dates to put on your calendar

  • April 30, 2027, at 11:59 p.m. Eastern: deadline to submit the Personalized Project Reference through the AP Digital Portfolio.
  • May 13, 2027, Session 1: AP Spanish Language and Culture exam.

The Personalized Project Reference is an outline for the presentation. Your teacher and coordinator should guide you through current submission instructions, permitted assistance, and school arrangements. Confirm the dates and requirements on AP Students.

How to prepare with purpose

  1. Use current materials. Check whether a preparation resource reflects the revised exam before treating its task checklist as current.
  2. Keep the four skills connected. Read or listen to a manageable Spanish-language source, summarize its message, and explain one idea aloud or in writing.
  3. Practice follow-up questions. Give a reason, add an example, and clarify your meaning when an initial answer is too general.
  4. Bring a specific question to feedback. Ask about organization, comprehension, supporting details, or language control, then apply one improvement to a new task.
  5. Keep required project work your own. Follow College Board and teacher rules for sources, outside assistance, and AI. Use the official packet to guide the actual project.
